Sintren Dance

Sintren Dance, also called Lais, is a traditional dance of West and East Java. The dance contains some magic in it. It tells about a magical encounter between lovers, Sulasih and Sulandono.  Sintren dancer must be a young virgin girl representing Sulasih with six other dancers as her ladies in waiting. The main dancer goes into a chicken cage wrapped by a cloth, then the six dancers dance around the cage and chant a mantra to call the spirit of Sulasih. The mantra is considered succeed, the main dancer will come out the cage and become pretty by makeup. The main dancer will then dance with gending music accompanying her.
